Spring to Summer 2023 Programme for Green Skills Workshops

Join us this spring and summer for some of our workshops being held at R-Urban. R-Urban is an eco-civic hub based on the Teviot Estate in Poplar. Here, they run a public programme of events, workshops and activities across food growing, cooking, repair, craft, ecological building and composting. We also run a programme of workshops at the Teviot Centre nearby. More information, dates and bookings can be found on the Eventbrite page for R-Urban.


All R-Urban events are free and open to all ages. We welcome attendees from all walks of life and are always looking for new friends and collaborators. Food is veggie/vegan friendly and halal.



  • Every Thursday 11am-1pm - Green Skills volunteering at R-Urban. A weekly session to learn and share green skills. The session will involve the maintenance and care of the R-Urban site. Tasks include seed sowing, planting out, weeding, composting, watering, harvesting etc. A free lunch is provided to all participants. Managing and growing at the shared growing space at R-Urban.

  • 30th-31st March, 11am-4pm - Permaculture Bed Building at R-Urban. Over the course of two days we will be building three new interconnected raised beds for wetland crops that will connect to our grey water system. The beds will be planted using permaculture principles to improve biodiversity, introduce new habitats and grow crops that can be used for making later in the year. Free lunch provided!

  • 6th April, 4-6pm - A new growing season at the Teviot Centre.Join us at the Teviot Centre to kick-start the year’s growing. We’ll tidy the garden, top up beds with compost, and plant some herbs and salads to kick-start the growing season. There will also be free seeds and seedlings to take home.

  • 13th April, 4-6:30pm - Clothes mending and upcycling at R-Urban. We will have a look at common wear and tear and ways to fix them. We will cover: How to fix a small hole, how to repair a broken seam and how to sew buttons. We will also practice different embroidery stitches and learn how to create a design to cover a stain or a small hole. Please bring clothes that need mending and we will advise how to mend them.

  • 20th-21st April, 11am-4pm - Build a food growing planter at R-Urban. We’re building a new big shared food growing raised bed at R-Urban. Join us to learn about planter construction and to plant up the new growing space. We’ll also plant up our other new permaculture bed with a range of flowers and shrubs. Join us to learn about growing from seeds and cuttings, and take some back with you to grow at home. Free lunch provided!

  • 22nd April 11am-5pm - Earth Day Swap Shop at R-Urban. Come along and swap your unwanted seeds, plants, new and gently used clothes with others, and get ready for the summer. To keep things fair, we do not accept large empty/ almost empty containers on arrival, for loading (i.e. suitcases, trollies, vehicles). Light refreshments on arrival!

  • 27th April, 4-6pm - Clothes mending and upcycling: The art of Patching at R-Urban.This session we will learn how to use old textiles to create patches to mend or reinforce our clothes or create a new textile piece. We will look at different techniques like appliqué, patchwork and sashiko. Please bring clothes that need mending and old clothes or fabric off cuts to upcycle.

  • 27th April, 6-8pm - Bangla feast with Aleya at R-Urban. Join us for a big Bangla feast to kick start this year’s programme. Hosted by Aleya and the Teviot Bengali sisters.

  • 4th May, 4-6pm - Tomato, chilli, pepper and courgette planting at the Teviot Centre. Join us for some gardening at the Teviot Centre. We’ll plant tomatoes, courgettes, chillies and peppers in the shared beds and learn how to maintain them. There will also be free plants to take home.

  • 4th May, 6-8pm - Bangla feast with Noore at R-Urban. Join us for a Bangla feast with Noore, when we'll explore the stories behind ingredients and dishes.

  • 11th May, 4-6:30pm - Free flow mending and upcycling session at ` R-Urban. Please bring a mending project to work on and we will assist you. Use our sewing machines, material and expertise to extend the life of your clothes and embellish them.

  • 25th, 26th May, 11am-4pm - Greywater Reuse at R-Urban. Over the course of two days we will be dismantling and rebuilding our onsite grey water system. We will be looking at the successes and failures of the system and the science behind it. Free lunch provided!

  • 1st June, 4-6pm - Beans, khodu and pumpkin planting at the Teviot Centre. Join us for some gardening at the Teviot Centre. We’ll plant khodu, pumpkins and beans in the shared beds and learn how to maintain them. There will also be free plants to take home.

  • 1st June, 6-8pm - Hot Smoking at R-Urban. Join us for a communal meal at R-Urban Poplar. We will learn about different smoking techniques to preserve ingredients, and prepare some hot smoked dishes.

  • 8th June, 4-6:30pm - Clothes Darning at R-Urban. For this session we will share how to mend large holes using darning techniques. Darning is great to mend socks, knitted jumpers or Jersey. Please bring something holey!

  • Thursday 06 July, 2.00- 4.30pm - Natural Dyes and Clothing Repair. Join Alisa to learn how to make your own naturally dyed fabric and how those fabrics can then be used to repair and embellish your existing garments.

  • Thursday 06 July, 6.00 - 8.00pm - Climate Companions Pot Luck Feast! A celebration of world cuisines at R-Urban to reflect upon and draw to a close the 2023 climate companions programme. A potluck feast to celebrate the world cuisines of Poplar - bring a dish! We only ask that if you bring a dish it’s big enough to share with others!

  • Thursday 13 July, 4.00-6.00pm - Summer Plant Care and Harvest @ Teviot Garden. Join us for some gardening at the Teviot Centre. This month we’ll learn about caring for plants in the summer months and we will harvest the onions we planted together.

  • Thursday 13 July, 6.00-8.00pm - Onion Harvest Meal. Join us for a big meal that makes the most of our onion harvest from the Teviot Centre.

  • Thursday 20 July and Friday 21 July, 11:00am-4:00pm - Building with Soil! In this two day workshop we'll be doing all things clay - from the messy to the decorative, the big to the small. On Thursday we will be getting hands-on with Jon Kalviac, who will lead us through clay’s uses as a natural building material as we attempt to create R-Urban’s very own tandoor cob oven. On Friday we will learn how to extract and process clay from the earth and use it to make homewares and decorative tiles.

  • Thursday 27 July, 4:00-6:00pm- T-Shirt Upcycling Workshop. Join Sunnyjar to learn how to upcycle old T-Shirts into new items.

  • ***POSTPONED*** Thursday 27 July, 6:00-8:00pm - Clay Cooking. We’ll test out our new tandoor clay oven, built during workshops on the 20th and 21st July. Join us for a big feast! *** POSTPONED***

  • Thursday 03 August, 3:00-6:00pm - Repairs: Computer Building. During the session we will learn how to build a desktop PC, as well as sharing information on how to get hold of components cheaply and how to apply these skills to laptop repair. This workshop is aimed at participants who don’t have access to a home computer. We also welcome people who have their own computers and want to understand more about how they work (please note that this is not a place to diagnose issues with your existing devices). The session will be led by Edwin. There are ten places available, with five PCs available to take away following the workshop.

  • Thursday 03 August, 4:00-6:00pm - Summer Plant Care, Harvesting and Seed Collection. Join us for some gardening at the Teviot Centre. This month we’ll harvest summer vegetables and learn about collecting seeds for next year’s growing season. There will also be free homegrown veg to take home.

  • Thursday 10 August, 4:00-6:00pm - Kintsugi Workshop - In this session Sunnyjar will be leading us through how to mend with glue and the art of kintsugi repairs.

  • Thursday 10 August, 6:00-8:00pm - Mushroom Meal (BBQ). Join us to harvest and cook the mushrooms we incubated back in June during the Climate Companions workshop with Alani!

  • Saturday 12 August, 12:00-4:00pm - Swap Shop! Free plant, seed, clothes and toy swapping event. Bring your unwanted plants, seeds, new and gently used clothes and toys to swap with others. Sign up here

  • Thursday 17th August, 5:00-7:00pm - Summer Harvest Meal with Aberfeldy Big Local. Join us and Aberfeldy Big Local for a cooking workshop making the most of the summer harvest, and using the fruit and veg dried in our new solar dehydrator. Women only session prioritised for Aberfeldy Residents. Please email hello@aberfeldybiglocal.com to sign up.

  • Thursday 31 August, 6:00-8:00pm - Clay Cooking. We’ll test out our new tandoor clay oven, built during workshops on the 20th and 21st July. Join us for a big feast!

  • Thursday 7th September, 4-6pm - Summer harvest at the Teviot Centre. Join us for our final gardening workshop of the year at the Teviot Centre. This month we’ll harvest the rest of the summer crop, collect and share some more seeds for next year, and plant some autumn vegetables. There will also be free homegrown veg and plants to take home. Please note this session takes place at the Teviot Centre (1 Wyvis St, E14 6QD). We will then walk to R-Urban to cook what we've harvested!

  • Thursday 7th September, 6-8pm - Summer harvest meal. Join us for a meal which celebrates this summer’s harvest! Expect some delicious fresh veggies.

  • Thursday 14th September, 4-6pm - Repair and Reuse patchwork. Join Sunny Jar to learn basic sewing skills (both hand stitch and machine-based) to make patchwork fabric pieces for the home. Come make a cushion or mend a seam.

  • Thursday 21st September, 5-7pm, Making preserves with Noore. Join Noore to learn about making pickles and chutneys from the last of the summer fruit and veg to keep your winter cooking bursting with flavour.

  • Friday 22nd September, 1-3pm, Clone your mushrooms with Alani Shafiq. The objective of the "Clone Your Mushrooms" workshop is to educate individuals on the process of cloning a mushroom using low-tech methods. During the workshop, participants will have the opportunity to clone mushrooms for personal use and observe the expansion of the mycelial web into the substrate. Throughout the session, discussions will center on mushroom life cycles and the advantages of cultivating fungi. Click Here to book.

R-Urban tests a hybrid infrastructure on the Teviot estate – a social hub that is also a local, decentralised, productive food growing and waste management facility and a testbed for circular economy models. With the aim of empowering local communities to make positive changes in their neighbourhoods, we engage people in response to climate change, participatory architecture projects, food justice and local empowerment. These public programmes are hosted by R-Urban at our main site in Poplar and in collaboration with Leaders in Community at the Teviot Centre. We are part of the JustFACT project, coordinated by Wen. We're also supported by the Poplar Harca, Hill Housing, the National Lottery, ReLondon, LLDC.
